One more thing to look forward to.

Guess we might strongly consider throwing this in with the 80k mile maintenance schedule - sparkplugs, OCI, airfilter, cogged belt for balancing shafts (and associated hardware), and serpentine belt?

Does anybody have the part numbers list for the job?
1stvwparts.com shows prices:

Balancing Shaft Belt looks like $32.05USD
Tensioner $90.40USD

*UPDATED for part numbers - as best I can tell per ETKA (prices 1stvwparts.com)

1. bolts for balancing shaft cover (qty 5 listed - get 7?)
N 102 261 01 (M6x16) $0.32 each

2. bolt for vibration dampener/crank pulley (qty 1)
N 101 389 02 (M16x1,5x65) $0.80 each

3. balancing belt, cogged (qty1)
07D 109 119A $32.05 each

4. tensioner roller for belt (qty 1)
07D 109 243A $90.40 each

5. hose clamps for P/S cooler (qty 2)
N 102 555 01 $1.11 each - could probably use generic screw clamps

Looks like $127.07USD NOT including S&H (min $8.95) or about $136.02 with min S&H

If anyone can verify/ correct part #'s and/or quantities - please do so!

Also, any source for cheaper parts (though these guys are usually best for OEM parts)
They also sell the serpentine belt for $90.40USD 07D 145 933E (24,71x2569mm) - mine still looks fine, but I might replace it as well

Once this belt break, is there any danger to the motor if it was driven?

I can't believe how crappy of VWoA not to even have service info on this. I didnt even know there was a belt there.

Going to hopefully knock this out later this week. Gotta find the parts first though. Is 1stvwparts really the cheapest place. I cant believe that since they are basically a dealer. I searched and besides world impex.

Thanks for the pictures!

For some of those parts (belt and tensioner) a VW parts department is going to be the only place to get them.
Yes, they are the cheapest by far - try calling your local dealer parts department and ask how much they charge for it.
Granted, you do pay shipping, but it will more than cover the price difference - especially if you include sales tax.
Your dealer MAY match their prices (Westside in MSP did, my current dealer won't).

I will be replacing the balance shaft belt this weekend. My question is regarding the T10069 tool. Is this strictly necessary? The three VW dealerships in my area do not lend tools. They are also not helpful, friendly nor honest. Anyhow, it looks on the pictures and diagrams like a larger mm bolt, something like a 26mm hex or something. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it a clearance issue or something else about the counter-holder tool that is unique?

well the tool holds the harmonic balancer in place while you turn the bolt. You have to have a lot of leverage and I mean feet of leverage to get it off. Not sure of another tool that would work maybe a very large open ended wrench.
