I took my W8 for a minor service on Tuesday this week 03/05/2011 to my local VW main dealer and they replaced all 8 coil packs due to a recall. They told me that the recall had been issued in February 2011 and affected 2001 plate onwards passats. This recall is for cars booked in for a service and not a nationwide recall with letters going to all W8 owners. I noticed some articles on the internet relating to 500,000 passats some of which had engine fires. I had already spent £230 on coil replacements and also have 3 brand new coils as spares.

Was this the dealer or was it an indy shop? Reason I ask is I just had mine at an indy not too long ago and heard nothing of this...

VW main dealer in Towcester U.K. Minor service is £99.00 which considering the cost of synthetic oil x 8.5 litres plus filter £12 and sump plug is not too bad. To buy 10 litres of mobil 1 filter etc comes close to this price even with Costco prices (£29 + vat for 5 litres of Mobil 1 new life).

Went down to the local VW Dealer and spoke to the service reception about any recalls about my car, so that's my car booked in for new Coil-packs!

They will probably be using standard long life oil in the car as they say it exceeds the standard required for W8's. Originally W8's were specified for 0w30 with long life being 5W25.

I have my doubts and will be specifying Synta Platinum next time given I think the last 2 engines went t!ts up in part due to oil issues

Heh, typical, just had a major service done independantly. The garage used Quantum long life oil (and as he couldn't be bothered messing around, he just got the standard VW service kit for it).

Just went ot my local dealer in High Wycombe in the UK, and they have replaced all the coil packs for free, there is also a recall for the heated seat switch as well, which they are doing next week. I got them to replace all the spark plus as well, at the same time which they charged £95 for + half an hour labour, car seems as before, maybe slightly smoother now, just passed the 100,000 mile mark, and all going well.
