My oil was changed every 5k and I still couldn't escape the cam Adjuster issue.

Me too. In fact, I wonder whether my diligence and use of Seafoam actually loosened the piece of metal that eventually lodged in my cam adjuster.

I am the third owner of my car and I know I've done the right things (like flogging it from time to time) but who knows about the previous owners?

Yeah, I bought mine CPO'd at 40k. It apparently was owned by a VW executive. I've been changing it every 5k at the dealer. One of my screen was completely missing.

Have a 2004 Passat W8 Sedan reading 84,000 miles on the odometer. Never want to give it up!

Proud owner of my 2nd W8. First one melted away the cam adjuster at 99k. I'm in Okinawa, Japan and bought one from an elderly couple in California with 30k miles!! Happy Day. It is completely stock for the meantime, but I have some plans for the future!!

Earlier this year, after needing another shock therapy, I got sick and tired of fixing all those little things, One could really tell that the car had gotten old. So I sold it and got this:

2014 Passat Variant TDI 140 4Motion.
Not that exciting, but reliably and cheap to run. Gonna miss the W8 alot, perhaps I'll get a wagon with less miles as a winter beater in a few years, as a winter car it was truly incredible.
