Digging around the passat world forums I'm finding "thud thud" being mentioned with control arm bushing problems. Also a mention of a "quite" recall on the problem. Anyone got any thoughts/experience. I haven't noticed anything like that in our forum.

I think you need to start over and explain the noise/situation...

Control arms can thud... but not likely in a repeatable, predictable fashion, and with no dependence on road speed.

So, from the top... what's happening?

Sure,

No real noise till I hit 25mph
25-40 a "thud thud" noise that seems to follow wheel speed
Can't really place where it's at seems to be coming from everywhere
Does it in neutral
Braking, turning, accelerating have no effect on it
Much after 40 it's not noticeable.
No pull in steering, under load or otherwise.
I put the rear end on jacks no play in wheels, have not checked the front
but others have stated they didn't think it sounded like a bearing.

Mechanic thought it was a wheel out of balance this was checked all were fine

I wonder if it could be a slipped belt? I presume that would have been noticed if they were all off and checked for balance, but might be worth a quick look. Just make sure the tread pattern on each tire is consistent.

The tricky part is that it is predictably speed dependent... that kinda rules out things that don't move at the same speed (like control arms, bushings, exhaust hitting something, etc.).

Axles are about the only thing left...

keep it simple & check free if not cheap diagnostics first.

i would start with the tires. simplest thing to do would be throw on another set (having a winter set helps), or if you have any other 5x112 VW buddies, see if you cant throw 2 of theirs up front or out back and take a couple of spins around the block.

I mention this first, as I had a noise issue once (another vehicle), went nuts trying to figure it out & it turned out the tire got messed up internally (coulda been a pot hole etc.). When i would drive it would whump whump whump to speed, and then quiet down as the vhicle moved at higher speeds.

I'm going to have a different shop (not the ones who sold me the tires that told me they were cupping because it was a foreign car) look at them. I haven't had the tires for a year yet, but I do a lot of driving on sh*tty roads so who knows.

*bump of justice*

I would like to try and swap wheels with someone to rule that out, but you guys are the only people I know with wheels that would fit. Any other makes share our bolt pattern? I'm under the impression it's kinda rare.

I'll be in the Clarksburg area Monday if any of the WV members are around or would want to help.

Did you have your front shocks replaced recently?
