Oh.

I just bought rear discs and pads and they were more than £50 by a fair bit! Oh well...

Rear discs don't do much TBH and you can buy aftermarket ones without any worries.

Most cars do all the braking at the front, but as the W8 is "nose heavy", the bias is to the rear to prevent the nose from dipping in normal braking situations. In heavy braking situations, the bias is to the front. I find the rear pads wear quicker than the front. Clever people those VW engineers!

Hi,

I have been through all the options now!

The Godspeed discs are nice but they have a problem with the top hat / disc bolts touching the pads. You will need to grind a couple of mm off the inside edge of each pad to avoid this.

I have now had a set of discs made up by MTEC, using the data on this post. The discs are fine but please note that the bolt holes need to be opened out to 14.3mm from the 13.5mm size of the Merc wheel bolts. A 9/16ths drill does the job fine.

MTEC now know what to do for a W8 and sold me a pair for less than £150.

I should be receiving commission for these upgrades!

Has anyone considered the Porsche 6 pot conversion to the 334mm front discs?

Guys, sorry to do the "holy thread revival"...but just been having a search around for a set of discs for my 2003 W8 Estate and checking the parts codes it appears that they are "handed" i.e. left side, right side. Anyone know what the causes the "handing" and are the Mercedes SL500 discs also handed????
Regards, RogerB.

It's due to the spiral venting of the disc. The VW ones have an arrow on the bell of the wheel showing the direction it should be mounted in.

pic of my custom made godspeed discs, you can just make out the spiral on the vents (and see the labels, ofc)

The Merc ones were not sided as they are drilled as opposed to grooved.
