How close (mechanically) are the W12 and W16 to our engine?

From what I've read:
1. Al-Si block alloy is the same
2. W Geometry (main V 72.5 degrees, both minor V's 15 degrees)
3. Bore and stroke (W8 is 4L, W12 is 6L, W16 is 8L)

Not same:
1. Balancer shafts (neither the W12 nor the W16 need them)
2. 4 turbos on the W16
3. Intake manifold on W12 is magnesium I believe (vs. Aluminum on W8)

I'm sure there is more for both categories...

When I started shopping for a W8 a few years ago I found this PDF on W engines, it gives you a good idea of the mechanics etc. Hopefully the link works, if not shoot me a PM and I'll email it.

WOW! Thanks. I would have to say that this PDF is the best thing that I have read on the W engine.

Now if we could just find an informative version like that for the 4motion/Quattro system.

That PDF is the best thing I've read about the W8 yet! Thanks for the link!

Nothing sounds like a W8...

No problem. I don't have anything on the Quattro system but I found a couple other PDF's...

W12 Bentley has different con-rods to the W8 although normally aspirated W12 in Phaeton and A8 are the same as ours. All are scrap if something goes on the bottom end.

Yep although it differed in that it ran a dry sump system rather than the wet sump in the VW's. Touareg also came as a W12 although all were normally aspirated except for the Bentley
