    Posted: 10-May-2014 at 23:58
Recently I have cooling fan caused overheat problem. Trying to identify the root cause. Seems both fans work. So this afternoon I was trying to check relay for coolant fan. From relay panel I can see relay 373, 370, 173, etc, but from other forums I have found there usually are two 373 relays at least, like this picture I found from turbodiesel forum:

Here is mine from 03 W8:

Why is there only one 373 relay on relay panel? Is this 373 for coolant fan?

Also where is the cooling fan thermo switch located? or does W8 have one?

Thank you

You should be able to find that information in the Bentley manual.

I did, but there is no relay layout specifically for W8. Do you know which page should I look at? I checked section W97 I think.

According to Bentley wiring diagram 74/7, there should be a 60A fuse for cooling fan 2. Anybody knows where it is located? The biggest one in my panel is a 50A fuse.

Also I believe the left side bigger fan is cooling fan 2 (V177) actually,

Before anything check your fans. With the car off see if they spin freely. If you have VAG-COM see if you have any stored faults in the engine module section. Both my fans showed up as faults.

I seriously just replaced both fans over the weekend because cooling fan #1 on the pass. side was locked up because the bearings were shot and cooling fan #2 on the driver's side the controller that's built into the fan went bad. (Not to be confused with the main fan control unit.

This is from the past weekend, boy what a PITA!!!

also changed my snub mount with a Apikol snub since mine was crumbling away and the car feels much more responsive but vibrates a little at lights since it's stiffer

Nice wheels

Where did you get your cooling fans? ECS tuning?

Also did you check the fuse? There is a 60A for driver side fan and I can't find it nowhere. I checked under dash relay board and ECM box, no luck

I think my control unit on cooling fan 2 (driver side) is fault.

I purchased the fans used from a autorecycler since I can't afford to buy new right now.

this is the fault I kept getting:

18308 - Coolant Fan Control 2
P1900 - 35-10 - Open or Short to Ground - Intermittent

I replaced the fan and all is good now. It's more than likely the control unit that's built into the cooling fan.

I don't see a fuse or relay for the fans:

The two coolant fans are controlled by Coolant Fan control module J293, mounted at left lower corner of radiator. The coolant fan 2 on driver side has its own control unit mounted on the fan itself. Referring to wiring diagram 74/7.
My EML code is gone but I keep getting code 18070/P1662 coolant fan 2 short to ground. Both fans spin but when engine temperature gets higher they sometime stop turnning. I suspect the control module J293 is down.
