**NOTE: PLEASE ONLY LIST YOUR P0011 INFORMATION HERE ONLY! ALL OTHER COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS, ADVICE, ETC. SHOULD BE POSTED IN THE TALK/ADVICE THREAD. THANKS!!** --Jeremy (SirRangeALot)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Please take a moment to describe your experience with this problem.
1. Year and model(wagon/sedan) transmission (6mt/auto)
2. Month/Day/Year the CEL came on
3. Mileage of the vehicle at time of problem
4. Solution/Repairs the dealer performed
5. The mileage since the repairs were made
6. Were you under Factory/Aftermarket Warranty
If not what were the out of pocket costs?
Or if you were under warranty, did you still encur
out of pocket costs (rental car, deductible, etc...)

I am doing this to bring attention to a growing problem that is a Design Defect and not a byproduct of vehicle abuse (lack of maintenance or abusive driving habits). As enthusiasts we are willing to take the risks associated with owning a high performance/unique vehicle. This does come down to VW taking responsibility for the problem and issuing a blanket repair to keep this from destroying the motor and reputation of this car. This by no means makes me want to sell my car or cause a panic amongst everyone. It's a real issue that if we stand up and let our voices be heard, they (VWOA) cannot just sweep it under the rug.
I want to protect this incredible vehicle and the owners who drive it with passion each day.
Josh

4. CEL light was reset...at first the problem wasn't resolved but the problem worked itself out I suppose.

6. I am under aftermarket warranty but for what they did it wasn't covered. I paid $50 for them to reset a stinkin' light.

1. 2003 W8 Variant, 6sp (build date May 2003)
2a. Aug 13, 2006
2b. Aug 7, 2007
3a. 61,715 km (38,348 miles)
3b. 80,330 km (49,915 miles)
4. Code scanned and cleared; no work done
5. About 10k miles between codes; only about 1500 miles since the most recent
6a. Scanned & cleared by dealer under factory warranty
6b. Scanned, but not cleared, by me; I do have factory extended warranty (CPO)

In both situations, the effect was the same: hunting at idle (never stalled, but felt like it would); shaking, as though not all cylinders were firing; power loss under acceleration. In both situations, the CEL stayed on for a while despite the car "fixing" itself, only to turn off after a number of restarts.

FWIW, I use Elf Excellium DID oil, and conduct used oil analysis testing at regular intervals. There have been no signs of wear - in fact, just the opposite.

Problem June 2007 2003 W8 Variant 39,000 miles synthetic oil since new.
Situation: Valve train rattle on start up. Engine shake at low rpm. Engine caution light came on later. Ran fine at higher rpm. Took it in to the dealer. Dealer diagnosed it as cam positioner. Dropped engine. Installed two(2)redesigned new part number cam positioners. Stated the redesigned cam positioners would eliminate future problem in this area. Work done under original factory warrantee at no cost to me. Work took three weeks to complete because other W8's were in the shop at the same time for the same issue and only one mechanic was qualified on the W8. In the meantime I was given an 06 Jetta turbo diesel as a loaner and was amazed at the performance and gas mileage (45mpg). Asked if I could buy one. They said I could buy an 06 but not an 07 or 08 as they couldn't meet California pollution standard, so as a result VW wouldn't export those year to the USA>

1. 2003 Sedan (I prefer Limo) AT5 (Tip) - build date 6/2002
2. 44,350 miles
3. 12/30/2007 - 2:30PM CST
4. Not sure yet - car has been running like a champ until today. Going into Costco when I got a rough idle. I've had it once before, but it went away after the car was shut off and restarted.
No such luck today! After three restarts the CEL came on...
Went to Checker and had the code pulled/ reset.
In my heart I knew what it was, P0011, which it was.
I bought 9 qts of Mobil1 0W-40 503.01 oil, I keep a spare filter around the garage, and Pyroil oil treatment. AutoRX it ain't, but I can't get picky now.

I hope that does it.

6. If not, off to Westside VW under extended warranty with a 100.00 deductible.
I will keep the W8 brotherhood informed.

Signing off with a heavy heart,
Stewart
p.s. I need a hug and a beer...

I am sad to see that this really is an issue affecting the majority of our cars and not a select few. Thank you extended warranty!

2002 sedan auto
1/15/08 - CEL came on
34,000 miles
The dealer said it was either an oil screen or Cam adjusters. Wasn't the screen ($250 to find that out), so didn't fork over the 9k they wanted to adjust the Cams.

I am also noticing that my miles per gallon are getting worse. I am down to about 15MPG.

I am out of warranty, so don't have any place to go. Has anyone contacted VWOA on this and received an official reply?
