Mine just thew the "magical" code today!

I'm sorta happy about it, because I'm still under the factory powertrain warranty (42K miles and delivery date of 8/03). Going to take it to Jim Ellis VW tomorrow AM. I've actually read posts from their W8 tech on VWVortex. Going to shoot him a msg...

When I called the service advisor and told her that I needed to make an appt for a major service, she asked if I wanted to leave the car overnight or wait for it.

1. 2003 Sedan with 6MT transmission
2. Feb/18/2008 the CEL came on
3. 42,6XX miles at time of CEL
4. Cam adjusters, O2 sensors (also produced fault codes), and clutch (replaced per my request) were the repairs.
5. 0
6. My car was under under factory powertrain warranty, but still had to get my own rental car. The powertrain warranty covered the cam adjusters while my CPO covered the O2 sensors. I paid $315 for the clutch/throwout bearing parts and no labor.

1. 2003, Sedan, Tip
2. April 5th, 2008
3. 56,500
4. I don't trust "The Man"; did not take it to the dealer. I went to autozone and comfirmed it was indeed a P0011 code (it was). I then ran sea foam in the crankcase (oil) for approx. 10 miles - code went out. I then changed oil and filter with the addition of about 3/5 bottle of sea foam; plan to change the oil again in 1k miles. I'll discuss further in the comment thread.
5. 0 miles
6. I am NOT under a warranty . Cost so far: $160 for oil, filter, seafoam, and all some misc. tools.

It seems to be a right of passage... am I now a full member of Clan W8?

Damn, I got the code today.

06/12/08

45,9xx miles

2004 variant 6MT

Build date March 2004

Car originally delivered January 2005

Car was running rough at low speed. The engine acts like either it is being starved of gas or coil pack failure. However, when I had the ECU scanned P0011 came up. The oil was changed within the last 500 miles and I used Motul 8100 5W40 oil.

Next step is an appointment with the dealer.

Yet another member of the cam tensioner victims.
Hit me at 88K. No warranty. No helpful response from VWOA. I have had the dealer techs do nearly every service with the exception of two oil changes (which I have done every 4 to 5 K)This car has been "babied" probably unlike most W8's. It is definitely not a result of driving it too hard.
Another W8 owner being cammed or conned by VW

Well add me to the list and put me down as one unhappy camper.

2003 sedan auto

MIL light was diagnosed on 9/4/08 and showed the dreaded P0011 code.

55,000 miles

Ran through 3 warm up, cool down cycles to see if the code would reset-no such luck.

Disconnected the battery to reset the code-MIL light came back on after a few minutes.

It is probably just a coincidence that this happened 5000 miles after I put in Mobil 1 0w-40 and a Mann filter for the first time. All my other on schedule oil changes were done with Valvoline Synpower 5w-40 and Fram filters. The Valvoline has been disappearing around my area and so I used the only other oil I could find that met the Volkswagen standards which was the Mobil 1.

I figured that my car has never been driven hard and the oil and filters were changed according to the recommended intervals and full synthetic oil was only used so I would not have the P0011 problem. Guess I was wrong and my luck ran out. I guess when it rains it pours, as I was t-boned by a hit and run driver in April and my W8 was in the body shop for two months while I fought with my insurance company on how they wanted the repairs done. As soon as I start driving it home from the body shop the airbag light comes on and it is another two months before I can get it to a VW dealer to repair what turns out to be a airbag wiring harness that was damaged in the accident. Shortly after I get it back with the fixed harness, the P0011 code shows up. I had to spend $8000 of my own money to get the car repaired and I only just got $5000 from my insurance company, Wawanesa. They are putting me through major headaches to get the other $3000 I have put out. Low insurance prices are definitely not worth the surly treatment I have received from these major a**holes. Now I am facing more repair bills of maybe $5000 to $9000 for something VW knows very well that it is their design flaw that is responsible.

If there is any kind of legal action that is started, you can definitely sign me up. I am curious if anyone has at least taken them to small claims court? I also know how VW tries to totally avoid responsibility by how they treated a friend of mine with one of the 1.8 turbo engines that was destroyed by a disintegrating turbo caused by the sludge problem. It was over 8 months of fighting and legal threats before VW took care of the problem. Vw tried every trick and excuse to try to avoid taking care of the repairs.

I went out today and picked up the Seafoam and Mobil 1 to see if I can make a difference with an engine flush and oil change. I will keep my fingers crossed. After reading all the posts about using the Seafoam, I am still not sure which is the best method, just letting it idle for 5-10 minutes or driving it for 100 miles or so. Is there a consensus about which is the best method?

Thanks for this site and all that post, hopefully there will be strength in numbers relating to this very expensive problem.

-2003 Sedan 6mt
-Feb. 3, 2008
-Dec. 2, 2008
-63,000 miles
-70,500 miles
-Feb 3. Ran the codes at a Schmucks and found the p0011 code. Took it to Appleway VW and had them fix the one side. Wouldn't do the other bank while they were in their because warranty wouldn't let them.
-Dec. 2. Mileage now is 70,500 and it is sitting in the VW shop again. Didn't throw a p0011 code but p0300, p0301, p0306, p0307. So I'm thinking the other bank has gone out now.
-I only had to pay the $108.60 for deductible in Feb. Will be paying more for the plug change and labor on this bill.

Not sure if it was a P0011 Code or not, dealer never told me.

1. 2003 Variant Tip
2. Late October/Early Nov 2008
3. 50,500k (EST)
4. First did diagnostic repairs through the computer, and reset the code. Was told to test it, get miles on it to see if the CEL would come back on, as my Factory PT warrenty for 5 years ended at the end of November. CEL came back on, took the car in, and had the Torque Converter replaced.
5. Maybe 120?
6. Yes, barely under VW Factory warrenty.
