GIAC does the "D" and "E", and now the "C".

I think the "D" can only get the 91-93 octane file - but that's a good one!

They do... And a friend of mine is a local dealer - but it's still a chunk of change.

So, we don't know what the difference is in ECU's, then (from '03 to '04)? I wish I knew a bit more about getting a dump of the EEPROM and being able to read/compare them. Some other forums have hobbyists with that expertise, but it's not too common among North Americans. If you speak Spanish (I don't...), this is a good site, and user madelgado has demonstrated experience with this kind of thing:

There are 4 ECU's listed for the BDP (North American) engine code, all of which using Bosch Motronic 7.1.1 management, and the part numbers span all model years (2002-2005):

ECU p/n               :               VIN
------------------------------------------------------
07D 906 018 D: PR-G0L F >> 3B-3-700 000
07D 906 018 E: PR-G0Q F >> 3B-3-700 000
07D 906 018 AP: PR-G0L F 3B-4-000 001 >>
07D 906 018 AQ: PR-G0Q F 3B-4-000 001 >>

For example, my VIN is WVWLK63B13E461545, or >> 3B-3-4xx xxx = a D ECU.

Basically... as we already know, 2004+ got a new ECU - AP for variants, and AQ for sedans.

(In the above, I presume "G0L" v "G0Q" is a Variant (L) versus a Sedan (Q) - correct?)

I would think the ECU would be transmission specific rather than body style specific?

My 6/2002 build 2003's VIN: WVWUK63B33P101198 has the "E" box

It's my understanding that the 4th digit of the VIN denoted the body style. However... yours is a "U"? I actually don't think there's any way to determine the transmission from the VIN; you would need the options code list.

The 5th digit denotes the engine (so we should all be "K").

The 9th digit denotes the year.

Perhaps body style (for W8) "U" is a sedan, whereas "L" is variant?

My 2003 Variant has a VIN that is WVWZK63B93E144865 with a build date of 9/2002 so the fourth digit probably does not indicate body style.

Bentley says 4th digit is body, 5th is engine
But it says "Depends on Model Year" for 4th & 5th digits?

Well, so far we're all "K" for the 5th digit - so safe to say that's the engine, I think.

And we've also got, for the 4th digit:
U = Sedan, Tip (2003)
L = Variant, 6MT (2003)
Z = Variant, Tip (2003)

Need a few more VINs to see if we get any overlap.

WVWUK63B53P059052

2003 Sedan, Tip. (Don't recall build date, I think 06/2002)
