This is a common problem on the W8 with the hoses on top of the tank and yes it has to be dropped to change them.

My 2003 W8 has developed a fuel leak that is alerted via the engine light (Evaporation Fault code.) There is a strong smell of gasoline, especially after filling the tank, and it even leave a pool of fuel under the car on the concrete. I have had this checked out by the VW dealer, and they confirm it is a fuel leak but they are not sure where. They tell me they will have to drop the sub frame to get to the tanks and filler tubes to find it. Has anyone else had this problem? I am going to call VW about this, since I just received a recall on my 2005 Touareg for the fuel filter flange leak, due to a crack in the flange.
