The wife reports the CEL was on yesterday... I'll scan tonight.

<sigh>

Did an oil change on Saturday, and a had a very spirited drive with the local club on Sunday (~500kms) - everything was fine. Perfect, even.

17698 - Coolant Temp Sensor at Radiator Outlet (G83): Signal too Small
            P1290 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16405 - Bank 2: Camshaft A (Intake): Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)
            P0021 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

These are the same two codes that were set a few months ago, which I did NOT reset when I scanned them. I haven't driven the car yet, but the wife reported no driveability issues.

Regardless, I'll be making an appt for the car to visit the dealer next week - I do have a few other items, including a pair of recalls, that need attention.

Also, it's worth noting that the P1290 code is not cataloged in Bentley (eBahn) for the BDP engine... weird.

P1290 isn't in the paper Bentley either.
Someone on PW had a thermostat failure on their W8 - I'll look and see if he posted a code.

*edit* JWJR404 had a CEL when they found the bad thermostat, and temp. sensor.
He has an extended warranty, so no code(s) posted.

I should add... I've had the thermostat replaced before (last July), for a P1293 code. This time around, however, I don't have any of the other symptoms (at least not yet), aside from the CEL. With the previous occurrence, the rad fan ran constantly, including a cool down period, and the in-car temp gauge had indicated that temps were above normal as well.

There was one other refence at PW:

After my W8 was in the shop for tree weeks for two new cam positioners, I thought my troubles were over. Three weeks later on a trip south the car started losing power at freeway speed. It would stumble for a couple of miles and then run smooth again. Then the CEL light came on and I thought "here we go again". I had no choice but to continue my trip as we were in the middle of nowhere. Took it in to the dealer on return home and they had it for two weeks trying to diagnose the problem. Finally had the VW rep check it out and the diagnosis was a fault in the #7 injection circuit. They replaced the #7 injector and the car ran fine. Now three weeks later I am having a similar stumbling problem with no CEL illumination! We'll se what they come up with this time!

I'm set for an oil/filter change tomorrow morning.
I'll have them run the 5 minute Pyroil treatment (per instructions)and then change the filter and oil.
We will see what that does.

have you used Pyroil before. I have never heard about it before, and I just looked it up on Valvoline's website.

No, I've never used it before - I think it is new.
It doesn't seemed to have helped (28 miles since oil change).

Update:
As of this morning, my car is running fine again - though the CEL is still there to remind of the horror of it all.
It took from 12/31/07 to 1/16/08 and about 400+ miles for the Mobil1 oil change mojo to work.
Still going in 1/24/08 for "the job" on my tensioners, as my appointment is set.
At least 2 other W8s in ahead of mine for the same thing.
Westside is big, and has experianced mechanics - they also stock the updated tensioners, so they don't have to come from Germany at least!
I'll hit Checker Auto in the morning and have the CEL reset.
The code will still be stored for VW to see.
