I know these are crazy rare, VW only made a handful and a couple aftermarket companies made a small number of them by dying stock ones black. Anyone know of how they took grey/beige ones and made black ones?

Did you ever find one?

No, I made one.

Here's a pic of it before I finished the rest of the head liner

And here's everything else black. Thought I had a pic of it all installed but can't find it at the moment

Nope, they're all grey or tan if it had tan interior.

So, what color did the black interior cars have, beige?

First off, respect for your handy work, that looks absolutely amazing. Ever since I saw one of the black lights I have thought about making one but figured I would never be able to get all the little lines correct.

I would assume you painted/dipped all the plastic parts; did you die or recloth the headliner and pillars?

It's all done with Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric dye. Everything. Headliner, plastics, door seals, visors... everything. That dye is amazing. The console was the hardest part. Basically mist it on, scratch off where it's supposed to shine through, mist it on, scratch off, etc until it's all covered. It's not perfect, but you wouldn't know unless you really looked at it.

I was thinking about doing that misting and scratching process with plastidip. Figured it wouldn't be worth the hassle to do it with that though since the durability of it would mean I would have to redo it every few years at most.

All the pieces being colored with the same dye would eliminate my biggest fear, having every part be a different shad of black. I feel that makes a car, or any project for that matter, look hacked.

Yeah, I wouldn't do plastidip, especially with something you'd be handling frequently.

Did you pull all the buttons out to get all the sides of the switch that controls the main light?

Yes, everything that needed to be painted broke down to individual pieces. I did break one of the springs inside one of the map light buttons though, so be careful :(

Okay, good to know. When I pulled it down before I couldn't get the electronics out. Can I PM you when I get it back down if I need help pulling it apart? I will have to do it soon since you are trying to sell your baby.

Around the edge you should be able to see where the face snaps on. You have to take the face off before taking the buttons out IIRC. It's been a while.

I already started painting some of the components in my car, and I must say that I am even more impressed with the finial product than I was expecting so far.

Sean,

What did you use to "scratch" the paint off of your switches? Everything I have tried so far has pulled/ripped the paint.

Many thanks. I am finding that the paint is not holding up all as well as I hoped. I think it might have been too bog of a jump from beige to black. Lots of touching up to do

Bummer. Yeah, it took me several very light coats. I went from light grey to black, and yes, it does take quite a bit, especially on the fabric. In the end, you have to almost expect it to be more of a very dark charcoal. Because it'll look like a very rich black, but the moment something brushes against the black it'll look more gray. It takes some work to really break loose all the fibers and make it feel like fabric and not just spray paint.

Thanks Sean. Yea I have a bunch of spots that "wore" back to beige just from installation. I wish I had bought a gray interior to paint. I might rip it back down and paint it again because I have to touch up basically the entire thing.

If you decide to turn your car into a racer I will happily purchase your W8 light switch. Mine is acceptable looking just due to the fact that I am tall enough to not really see it

When I reinstalled mine, I did a fair amount of touching up while it was in place. Just ensure you mask things off really well if you go that route.

I was gonna spray it onto a sponge and then blot it on. The cans don't really work trying to spray upsidedown.
