As many of you know I have been fighting with a local dealer after purchasing a W8.

My question is do you think the car is worth the money or do I cut my loses and take the money 'n run?

I think it's a bit high for a 2003 Passat, but I have seen some listed for sale for more than that. I think it could go either way, just depending on if you like the car enough to put money into it or if you don't like the car and just want to cut your loses.

I voted "yes" for the simple reason that you're going to be very hard-pressed to find an equal of the W8 for the price. These cars can be expensive to own and maintain, but there's a lot more to it than price or we'd all be driving Honda Accords, I think.

Anyway for me the price would be worth it, but it's just my opinion. As a possible data point, I bought my car almost 3 years ago with more miles than that for $10k.

I got my 03 passat w8 a couple months ago with 69k for $7,000. So that seems high to me, but these cars are very hard to find in good condition so its really your call

The book value of your car is $12,000+ so I voted yes.

However, the fun value of a W8 is worth a lot too, another reason I voted yes.

Where did you get that value? I have been looking for a place to get realistic prices because KBB, AT, etc. all value the car at like $7,000

I am confused as to how this car can be so expensive to own. Other than the engine it shouldn't be that different than the V6 4Motion, right? What causes this car to be "Lambo or Ferrari" expensive? I have no problem putting money in the car but I don't have that much so I want to make sure I have the $$$ to put into it in order to make it worth owning.

oof..now that is putting me $1,200 over the value if I go through witht the repairs. But then I will have the major $$$ problem fixed since the W8 is chain driven.

Remember that the folks that write these value guides have never driven a W8 and have no idea how fun it is to drive. You have to put a value on that and the rarity of the car too.

When I bought mine I had five million people on VWVortex telling me not to get a W8 and only srdavis telling me to get it. I took a chance and am so glad that I did, I've drive many cars and this is by far the best one I have ever had in my life.

Most of the ancilliary parts are unique to the w8 and given it's limited production run (niche market) there aren't the same number of 3rd party parts around, which means you need to pay dealer prices for spares. 3200 GBP excluding vat and fitting for a gearbox from vw for example, radiators around 400 GBP each.

Thank you for the clarification. So the 4 year extended warranty I purchased will be paying for itself then if I decide to keep the car lol

Not only are three a number of unique W8 parts, but expertise on these engines is also somewhat hard to come by. For example, the number of people who actually know the best solution for the cam adjuster problems is quite small. Additionally, any work in the engine bay is often complicated by access problems due to the way the engine is shoe-horned into the bay.

Also, be sure to follow the recommendations regarding oil changes as they can help you avoid the cam adjuster problem, among others.

The extended warranty is likely to be very beneficial over the long haul.

I decided to keep the car and spend the extra money on it. I couldn't find another car that even came close to comparing. I might have over paid but I feel the quality will make up for it in the long run. Plus I just couldn't let the car get sold again and end up being used for parts.

look at it this way .. the car you now own is one of 40,000 world wide .. and only one of 5500 in the USA ... and if oyu have a manual then you have one of 550 in this country .. and if that manual is a stationwagon then you have one of 36 in this country .. .. that should help you sleep at night .. also once it is up and running go out to the freeway and floor it and hold on till 100-120mph and then just let up a bit and cruse at the 100-120mph area and relax and feel the car and how she is just caressing you and giving you everything you would ever want

I paid $8,900 for it and the additional repairs are estimated at $4,200 but I would only be paying around $1,700 for the repairs. So my total cost for the car would be $10,600.

What are your opinions?

I'm assuming you're getting these prices from a dealer. Find yourself a reputable independent mechanic that specializes in German cars. You'll save yourself a boatload of headaches and cash imo. This is my second W8 and plan on keeping it no matter the cost. I've owned several other VAG's since I sold my first W8 about 5 years ago and came back to another W8 simply because nothing compares. It's a void you will never fill.

And do yourself a favor? Personal advice from me since I did the same thing: don't worry about every single thing that could *potentially* happen. You will shave years off your life and lose sleep if you constantly wonder "what if." If you can't shake that, then I would suggest finding something else.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

The dealer was able to get the light off by flushing the ATF. So I am going to go with that for a while and see if it comes back up. If it does it will be covered by my warranty.

Check and and purchased it before I purchased the car. I can't believe how smooth it is at high speeds. I am used to having "more used" cars so they would always give me some shake or shimmy before I got to 80. Radar detector with active live alerts connected to my phone is going to be my life saver

I just love this car so much. It is just such a nice place to be.

Hey Ken, just out of curiosity, where did you get the figure of only 36 W8/6MT wagons? I have a build spreadsheet from VW that shows 105 were made and delivered in North America. This was obviously a long time ago, and counts Canada. So, your data may be from a lot more current source.

Does the count represent all the cars currently in existence?

I think I like having 1/36th of all the cars in the US.

Ken,

Was this for the PO741 Engine Light code or some other code? Wanted to find out if flushing and replacing the ATF is the right (and most economical option).

Thanks.

cthibby,

That is basically what I did. It let me get the car inspected but soon after the light came back on. However, my TC is shot and my car is jerky off the line and at lower speeds. But I am just waiting for the extended warranty to kick in and then replace it.

Thanks Ken. How long have you driven the car with the TC shot? I'm hoping for at least a couple of months since it hasn't started to slip yet (knock on wood)... Appreciate the insight.

Ive been driving mine on a bad TC for almost 2 years now. Still going strong. I do have a slight slip between 2nd and 3rd gear on a cold run but other than that it runs fine. I cleared the code the first time it came on the dash and actually has not come back on since.

cthibby, I have been driving with the TC shot since I got the car. I believe that the dealership that sold the car to the dealership that I purchased it from just cleared the code. So there is no telling how long it has been shot but it likes to slip (for at least 1 second) at least once a day moving into or out of 1st.

Okay, so I just noticed that I have a bubble in my drivers front tire. I know with AWD all the tires should be replaced, unless the other tires are close to new then I will replace just the damaged tire. How hard is it to update the speedo/odometer if I replace with bigger tires, say 225/50R17 instead of the stock 225/45R17?

I don't think you'll notice much of a change and the speedometer doesn't have to be recalibrated.

You can't adjust the speedometer on VWs. But, with stock tires, the speedometer reads about 5mph over what you're actually doing. Going a slightly larger size will actually make it more accurate than it is stock.

I know this because every stock VW I've been in the speedo is off, as was mine, until I upped the tire size when going to 19s. Now it's pretty much spot on.

Thats good to know. I'm surprised that VW doesn't allow the spedos to be adjusted. Thats probably why they have the spedo over to account for people using larger wheels.

More so because it ensures that if people get pulled over for speeding they can't blame it on the speedometer. You have to assume some degree of inaccuracy, so pretty much all manufactures error to the side of the speedo reading higher than actual. Save their butts for getting sued for having them inaccurate the other way.

The HID are supposed to be brighter than the halogens correct? Mine are not even close to as bright as the halogens. So I am gonna need a new set of white bulbs.

But I want to run with yellow lights, not legal in RI so I know I will have to switch back when I get pulled over. I would prefer to have Hella as to match the other front lights. As they are now, the halogens are brighter so that is why I am thinking about converting them. I just don't want to have to spend like $300 for HID bulbs if they are going to be dimmer than halogens.

(In my case, my HIDs were old and tired and replacing them has made a world of difference. I think you'll be happier if you just suck it up and replace the HIDs with new ones.

Just my personal opinion.

D2S's are not even remotely close to $300 unless you're dumb enough to get them through a dealer.

You can get a pair of Philips 4300k between $40-$75 shipped if you look on eBay like I said before.

The Hella Extreme Yellow Bulbs are $100 a piece, I have been searching everywhere for them. But I will buy some new D2S and see how bright they are.

Well yes and no. There are pictures of my car for the headlights but no pictures to show off the car itself. I was planning on taking pics of it last week but stuff kept coming up and then I got the bubble in the tire. I figured I might as well have the work done that it needs as well. Now it is in the shop waiting for the warranty company to approve the work on the torque converter. I dropped it off Sunday night, the agent came yesterday and will deliver his findings today...guess time is what I am paying with instead of cash.

I got another bubble in a tire....I am going to replace it in kind for time being but I would like replace all my tires with something more durable. The car came with Toyo Entensa HP. Suggestions for stronger tires, especially the sidewalls.

I'm running Pirelli P-Zero Neros and I am very happy with them. They served me well in the worst winter we've had here in a century. I always keep all-seasons on my W8 as it's my winter vehicle.

I will look into those. The roads around here are horrible, I know for a fact that this was caused by either an unfixed pothole or a raised structure during road work.

Y'know my variant came with Pirellis and I have to say I was not impressed with them at all this winter. Quite possibly the worst tire I've owned over a winter season. I'd love to get Blizzaks again but as much as I drive the car the cost doesn't justify the means.

Cool, looks like Florida. I'll give you a rubber cookie if you can tell me the origin of the "V" you've got thrown up.

It's actualy RI

Since you have a military background I will assume that you are talking about the "V" for victory from the Allies during WWII. Although, that is supposed to be with palm facing person giving it.

Yes. The "V" given in this way is taken by people outside the US the same way as the upraised middle finger is here.

That's why I figured he meant the military background. And I honestly didn't even think about this being a global site when I posted it. Sorry to my UK Empire friends    although I have no problem giving the camera "the bird"

Yes, my reference was to "Victory" and WWII.

While living in Europe and my travels in Europe, no one ever told me that "V" was something bad.

It's the same in Australia as well. If the back of your hand is facing YOU, it's a "V" for victory...if it's facing the other guy, it's the middle finger.

Anyone from Europe care to chime in on this point? :-)

Thanks guys. Like it has been said it is really not that hard to do at all. The hardest part for me was lifting up my car so I would have room to work.

And now you all can see why I want to slam my car but can't because I will never get it home since this is the best looking part of my driveway in terms of road condition

Productive weekend. Got the other 3 window gaurds/vents on, hopefully fixed the issue with the drivers door look not opening completely on the first pull after it has been locked for a while, adjusted the lock rod so it is level with the trim when the door is locked, and finally altered the wiring out of the headlight switch so now my fog lights are my DRL.

I haven't hooked it up to anything yet but it does look a lot better than just the blank filler.

I meant that it is not hooked up and controlling anything. I only hooked up the power, the ground, and one of the "control" wires, this is required to have it turn orange when pressed.

After reassembly I am now getting this error code:
17087 - Brake Switch (F)
P0703 - 35-00 - Electrical Malfunction
On top of this the tail lights don't work and the trans park/neutral lock only lights up once the car is reving highly. I am thinking this is just the brake pedal switch...anyone have any other ideas as to what else it could be?

So I coppied yet another of Sean's amazing mods, huge surprise right? I dissasembled my fogs and painted the interior lens. I wanted to test the light to see if I needed to put more coats on before resealing the assembly. So I reinstalled my fogs and turned them on and they looked amazing... Then I remembered that I installed my yellow fog lights but I was way to tired to rip out the fog lights and switch out the bulbs.
